Why You Should Trust My Instant Pot Mini Review
- Cookbook Author: I've written 5 Instant Pot Cookbooks that have been authorized by Instant Pot.
- Efficient: That's the only way I know how to do things in the kitchen. Who has time to waste when you're trying to get food on the table? I'm known for my ruthless efficiency and use the pot in pot cooking method every chance I get.
- Gadget geek!: I'm a self-proclaimed food tech enthusiast and have been known to purchase (and review) just about any kitchen appliance I can get my hands on.
1. Footprint
This Instant Pot Duo Mini has a footprint that is 1/3 smaller than it's 6 quart counterpart. It is perfect if you have a small kitchen or cooking space, want something that is portable, or just prefer to store your kitchen gadgets away after each use. Here are some great uses for your Duo Mini:
- RVs
- Dorms
- Small Apartments
- Hotels
If you need exact dimensions of the Instant Pot Duo Mini to see if it will fit in your kitchen space, the measurements are:
11.81 x 10.51 x 10.98 inches
2. Capacity
This Instant Pot Mini capacity is 3 quarts. Refer to the graphic below for some examples of some different things that will fit inside of this tiny pressure cooker.
What Can You Make In The Instant Pot Duo Mini?
Almost anything you make in your 6 or 8 quart Instant Pot can also be made in your 3 quart Instant Pot Duo Mini. You'll likely just need to decrease the servings you're preparing. As long as it fits inside below the Max Fill line of the Instant Pot liner, you're good to cook it.
Some of my favorite things to make in my Instant Pot Duo Mini are:
- Soup
- Beans
- Cheesy Cauliflower
- Rice
- Yogurt
If you're looking for more recipes to make in your Instant Pot, check out some of my Instant Pot Cookbooks:
Indian Instant Pot, Keto Instant Pot, Instant Pot Fast and Easy, Healthy Instant Pot & Vegetarian Instant Pot.
3. Features
The Instant Pot Duo Mini might be small in size, but it packs a lot of features in a tiny package. It can take the place of up to 7 different kitchen appliances in one.
- Pressure cooker
- Slow cooker
- Rice cooker
- Steamer
- Saute
- Yogurt maker
- Warmer
It offers 14 cooking presets for quicker and more convenient cooking. Those are:
- Soup/broth
- Meat/stew
- Bean/chili
- Poultry
- Saute/searing
- Steam
- Rice
- Porridge
- Slow cook
- Keep Warm
- Yogurt
- Manual
- Pressure cook
- Delay Start
4. Ease Of Use
The 3 quart Instant Pot is quite intuitive. If you are familiar with the functions of any other Instant Pot, you'll be able to use this pressure cooker without any issues.
To cook in your Instant Pot Mini, all you need to do is:
- Find a great recipe
- Insert the ingredients in your pot
- Add additional water to create steam
- Secure the lid
- Make sure your lid is set to 'sealing' and not 'venting'
- Select preferred cooking time or preset
- Cook until the pot counts down to zero
- Depending on your recipe, you will either want to quickly release the pressure or allow it to naturally release
- Serve your meal and enjoy
5. Ease Of Cleaning
As with any other Instant Pot, clean up is super simple. Here are a few things you'll need to do to clean up after cooking:
- Either hand wash the inner liner with soap and water, or pop it in the dish washer.
- Take a wet rag and wipe down the surface.
- If you're short on time, you can even put the lid in the dish washer.
That's it. Nothing to take apart or scrub.
6. Price
Since this model has a smaller capacity, Instant Pot has priced it lower than the 6 and 8 quart Duos. If you find yourself not needing the extra cooking space, it is quite a value for all of the functionality it offers.
Do You Need Extra Accessories To Use The Instant Pot Duo Mini?
Extra accessories to cook with this mini Instant Pot are completely optional. You will notice some recipes that call for pot in pot cooking will ask you to use a pan inside of your Instant Pot. In this case, you will need a pan that fits comfortably inside of your Instant Pot liner with a little room around the edges for the steam to cook the food evenly.
Here are a few different pan options you can use if you are wondering which size to buy:
- Any 6 inch diameter pan that is up to 3 inches deep
- Aluminum Foil Pans
- Any heat-safe silicone pan that fits comfortably inside

I got my husband the mini for Christmas (never mind that he didn't actually want one) and have been busy making yummy recipes to show him that he really did want one after all. One of the things I just made was your Shrimp Coconut Curry with the pot in pot arrangement. I have a stainless steel pot which fits exactly inside the included pot but is about an inch shorter so I could add water and use the small trivet. I forgot to cover the inside pot with foil and I think that contributed to the result being rather soupy, but it was delicious nonetheless. However, I have a few questions. First, could is use 1 cup of water in the bottom of the outside pot with the trivet instead of two? Second, should I cover just the inside pot with foil? Three, can I use a silicone sealing lid on this arrangement (which would probably cover and seal both the inner and outer pots? (Can I ever use the silicon cover inside the IP?)
URVASHI PITRE says
He just didn’t know he wanted it 🙂
Yes to one cup of water. Yes just the inside pot. Yes to silicone but you may need to add a little cook time if you do that I’m not sure
Ann says
Hi,
Thanks for all the info. I don't have one yet, but am planning to buy. Is it possible, in the 3 qt mini, to cook 2 cups of dry beans, with the 4 cups of liquid being one-half water, and one-half tomato sauce or canned diced tomato with tomato juice?
Thanks,
Ann
URVASHI PITRE says
Yes it is. Safer with canned tomato and tomato juice than sauce I think.
Ann says
Thank you! One more question: do you think the dry (un-presoaked) beans will soften up adequately in a pressure cooker when cooked with tomato? On the stove top, I've always waited until after they've softened before adding anything acidic. I'm assuming you think the canned tomato and tomato juice would be the better way to go, rather that sauce, because it is more watery?
My biggest motivation in buying an instapot is to hopefully make more flavorful beans (avoiding salt and oil for medical reasons), and I've read that under pressure, cooking with tomato can add a lot of flavor "cooked into" the beans.
URVASHI PITRE says
So what I do is soak the beans in hot water for an hour and then cook. Cooking under pressure lends so much flavor! Check out my video on the Maillard reaction on my YouTube channel to see why
Ann says
OK, thanks! Will do.

I have a 6 quart and my mom recently got the 3 quart. Hers seems to take a lot longer to cook the same foods than my does. Is this normal? Does the mini take longer?
URVASHI PITRE says
10% less wattage is yes. It’s possible.
Pat C says
Urvashi, its 30% less wattage, all 6Q models are 1000 watts, the mini's are all 700 watts. and it depends on the amout of food they are putting in, if they are stuffing her 3Q almost full and using the same recipe amount in the 6Q taking up only half the volume, that may be one of the reasons.
URVASHI PITRE says
Good point in the volume as well.
Allison says
Fantastic, efficient, yet thorough review. Very helpful. Thank you!
URVASHI PITRE says
Glad it helped!

Hello! I really appreciated your review and can not wait to purchase the instant pot and your cookbook. Yum! But quick question - you mention using an additional pot inside of the stainless steel insert to cook different items at the same time. How does that work, and can you please post a link to the exact "accessory" items that you use with this model? The reason I had not already bought a pressure cooker was because I didn't think I could both cook chicken and steam rice at the same time - but it sounds to me that you're saying this IS possible? I would love more information on that. Thank you so much!
URVASHI PITRE says
Yes, you totally can cook multiple things in there. Here's a video showing you how to do it: http://twosleevers.com/pot-in-pot-cooking/
and here's a list of accessories that I recommend. note that not all of these fit into the Mini, they're more for the 5 quarts and up models. http://twosleevers.com/instant-pot-must-have-accessories-2/
Mary says
My only problem is how to convince my husband that I NEED another instant pot since I already have three. I do use them every day.
I too remember my mother using her pressure cooker. She used the open pan forever.
I have read that after World WarII inferior material was used in some pressure cookers and that was why so many failed.

Thank You for one of the best "review" / "how to" video's I've seen in a very long time! Straight forward, to the point, easy to listen to. Much appreciated! And the best review on the mini I've seen yet. Keep up the good work!
URVASHI PITRE says
Aww thank you! Glad it was helpful

Thank you for the very well made and to the point video. You mention in the video that the mini can handle 2lbs of meat. I am torn between the mini and the 6qt. I cook for two and usually make a meal that will last for two days (IE four boneless/skinless chicken breasts) which is roughly 1.4kilos (according to the package im looking)...that's roughly 3 lbs... Would this fit and cook in the 3 qt?
I'm not certain if the boneless/skinless would make a difference, or even if 2lbs is the max the 3qt can handle.
I like the smaller footprint of the mini..
URVASHI PITRE says
It can easily handle 4 boneless chicken breasts I think. I’d look at a 3 quart casserole you have at home to get an idea but I’m quite sure it will hold that. I cook for two and use it all the time.
Madeleine says
When using the mini do you need to half the quantities used in the recipes for the 6 qt instapot
URVASHI PITRE says
Not really, because not all the 6 quart recipes fill the whole pot. You have to look at the quantity of the main ingredient and see if that much meat or beans or rice or whatever will fit.
Roger says
Is there a cookbook exclusively for the mini?
Thank you.
URVASHI PITRE says
There isn’t but you don’t need one either really. All of my recipes work in one except for maybe the Pot in pot ones.
Judy says
I had a 6 qt and is now damaged. I was thinking of the 3 qt as a replacement as there's only 2 of us. How do I know when the 6 qt recipes won't work in my 3 qt in terms of quantity? If it is too much, do I just halve everything? But there has to be at least 1 cup of liquid, if I halve everything, there may not be enough liquid? How do I adjust? How do I know? Thx.
URVASHI PITRE says
Did you watch my review of the mini video? That will answer most of these.
Heather Williams says
Thank you for your review! I was trying to decide whether to buy a mini as an adjunct to my 6 qt., but I see I could actually make good use of it for main dishes as well. My whole family loves Indian food, so I am looking forward to following you and checking out your book!
URVASHI PITRE says
Glad it helped! I have an affiliate link for it if you'd consider using it for your purchase 🙂

Excellent review! Thank you! You helped me decide on the 3qt over the 6 qt (I already have a Wolfgang Puck 8 qt). I also just bought the Kindle version of your Indian cookbook as well. Can’t wait to try the recipes once my mini comes in two days. I made sure to order using your url. ????
URVASHI PITRE says
Aww thank you for using the URL. So thoughtful. I do love my mini. I can't wait to see what you make with the recipes!

Hello there and thank you for such a wonderful video!
I do have a question about spare sealing rings, where would I get one? I looked for 7 inch replacement sealing rings and could not find any, how would I get more? 🙂
Thanks for your time!
Ps, I love the font in the response box!
URVASHI PITRE says
You're welcome! I haven't yet seen replacement rings. I'm hoping they'll come up with them soon.

I have been enjoying your videos, I am not a total newbie to pressure cooking, but am to electric pressure cooking, on of my fondest childhood memories is of my mother standing on a kitchen stool scraping lima beans off the ceiling when the valve blew on her manual pot, and cursing. She never did stop using her old Mirro pot, and I think she would have loved my Instant Pot Mini.
URVASHI PITRE says
Is it bad that your description made me laugh? ???? but yes we are lucky to have ones that are so much safer and really fairly idiot-proof. Glad you’re liking the videos 🙂

You wonderful review had sold me. I was torn between the 6 quart and the mini. We are fast becoming empty nesters and your review convinced me to go with the mini. I'm confident it will do everything we need. I can't wait to try your butter chicken recipe.
Thank you.
URVASHI PITRE says
Oh I love hearing that! Those videos take a while to make and I always wonder if they help. ???? Thank you for letting me know.

Hello,
I have never used a pressure cooker before. I am planning to purchase an IP Mini. Since there is no "Poultry" button on the mini I am wondering if I can cook chicken in this model. Thanks
URVASHI PITRE says
Yes absolutely. Poultry was just a 20-minute preset is all. You can cook any kind of meat in a pressure cooker.
Jayne says
Thanks for the review. I have the instant pot DUO 6 quart. You mentioned that the mini doesn't "self seal". I don't know what that is. Could you explain please. Thank you.
URVASHI PITRE says
The Ultra when closed automatically turns the valve to sealing so go don't have to move it from venting to sealing. It is the only one so far that does that. The mini, duo, and Lux all require you to move the valve to sealing. That's what I was referring to.
liz says
The Instant pot website has a 2-pack in clear sealing rings for the 3 qt MINI, unfortunately they are both clear, I would prefer them in different colors to make it easier to to keep track.
https://store.instantpot.com/collections/accessories/products/sealing-rings-2-pack-clear-3-quart
URVASHI PITRE says
Oh I didn’t realize they had those now! I need to check them out. I agree. Colored ones would have been quite useful
Debbie says
https://store.instantpot.com/collections/parts/products/sealing-ring-2-pack-3-quart
This is the 2 pack with different colors!
Tommi says
I ordered those for my mini! The colored ones. Blue for desserts and red for spicy food like taco meat etc. The clear for everything else western and more non ethnic cooking. I also ordered a ceramic lined pot for it to do just milk an other desserts.
You can go into resources, choose a topic and click and then you will have different things they have for that particular product and accessories.
Jael says
I have a mini crockpot and one of my favorite meals is to put in a pound of round steak with a can of cream of mushroom soup and let it cook all day. Makes its own gravy and the meat turns out tender. I read somewhere that you can convert slow cooker meals to an IP. My question is: if I make this in the mini IP, would the soup be enough liquid, or would I also have to add water? I know I would have to experiment with cooking time. Thanks for the video. It was informative and so was reading all the comments.
URVASHI PITRE says
So I would put in 1/4 cup of water at most, since the meat will release a lot of water and you'll be able to use that for the pot to come to pressure. One thing I'd definitely recommend is to cut the steak into 2 pieces so that it all cooks through evenly, rather than one thick chunk of meat.
Jael says
Thank you for such a quick response! Do you have a recommendation of how long to cook?
URVASHI PITRE says
It's going to depend on the size of the meat pieces but I'd say about 15-20 minutes at most for 1 lb cut into 2-3 pieces
Jael says
Thanks. I forgot to say I have the IP mini. But the time sounds right.
Danny R says
Hi - and thanks for the video - it was very helpful. One piece of information I have not been able to find, even on the manufacturer's website, is the internal dimensions of the pot liner for the mini. I have noticed that there are fewer accessories for the mini (as opposed to the 6/8 qt models) and would like to know if some of the smaller stackable steam trays will fit.
Thanks again!
Danny R
URVASHI PITRE says
Hi there. Anything that is 6 inches in diameter will fit in it. Anything larger than that will govt you trouble
Prapti Gupta says
HI Urvashi!
Thank you for the detailed review but I was wondering since mini doesn't have a 'manual' mode button and most of the Indian recipes out there use the manual mode for cooking, I am not sure what other mode to use in place of manual. Maybe I am missing something 🙂
URVASHI PITRE says
Manual and Pressure Cook mode are the same thing. Some of the models have it described one way, while others have it another way. But in fact those are both "manual" buttons.
Prapti says
THANKS!!
Ariana says
Thank you so much for your video! I have two Duo60s so I can cook multiple things at a time, but there are only two of us so they can be overkill! I was curious what the minimum liquid is for the mini. I know it's one cup in the Duo60, is it any less in the mini to make something small like a half cup of rice. Thanks!!
URVASHI PITRE says
I haven't really tried half a cup of rice but there's no reason why you can't do half a cup PIP in there. I often do that in the DUO as well. I love mine I must say.
Beto says
I recently got my instant pot mini and after using it for a second time, it wouldn't hold pressure and steam kept leaking. I noticed that that there is a small pin on the backside of the pot's lid that "locks" the float valve in place and prevents it from sealing (doesnt allow the valve to move up/down) when it sticks out. Even when I push it in before closing the lid, it pops back out and I have to push it in again.. is this normal and have you experienced this on your IP mini?
URVASHI PITRE says
I haven't. It's time to contact IP support. That should not be happening. They're very good about supporting their products
Jane says
Thank you very much for your review. Just learned about the mini & was referred to your excellent video. Quick question: how well does the mini cook risotto? How much risotto can it cook?
I have been using the 6 quart 7-in-1 for several months. And ... we are starved for counter space. I bought the IP for several reasons, but mainly to prepare more plant-based meals - which can be time consuming when cooking & combining dishes involving grains & beans from scratch.
So, I have been thinking about getting a stove top 4 at pressure cooker for rice & grains and using the 6 qt IP for cooking beans, stews, soups, meats. My second question is the pros & cons of getting the mini over a quality 4 quart stove top PC?
URVASHI PITRE says
There's no reason it can't do risotto really. I'd say same capacity as for regular rice perhaps a little bit less. So at least 3-4 cups of raw rice. As to stove top vs electric. The lack of babysitting with the stovetop cooker, as well as its ability to do slow cook, yogurt etc sold me on electric pressure cookers year ago and I've never really looked back since.
Linda Hubbard says
I am thinking about buying an Instant Pot for my home. There are only two of us. I would use for both entrees and sides. Can the mini do small quantities of rice (1cup or less?). Would I be better off with the 6 quart? I would hate to buy the larger size and find that I always had to make large quantities; on the other end I would hate it if the 3 quart was too limiting to make soups and stews. By the way, congratulations on your weight loss, I have lost 60 pounds on Weight Watches and my husband is down 60 pounds with 20 more to go. Recommendations? Thanks.
URVASHI PITRE says
Ever since I've got the Mini, I use it for everything. I find it plenty big enough to make 6 servings of soups and stews at teh very least, and yet I can make 1 cup of rice in it. Now I can also make 1 cup of rice in the 6 quart, mind you, so that's not a limiting factor for the 6 quart. Personally I prefer the mini because it's so much easier to maneuver and clean etc. If you do end up buying it, I hope you'll consider using my link to it 🙂 http://amzn.to/2vQa2Lu
Bill says
Received my Mini yesterday, test run last night, clean up was easy and I really like it. It is plenty big enough and stores easily in the motor home, The 6qt can stay at home now. With a little more testing the 2 6qt cookers may need a new home.
- Have a Fun Day -
URVASHI PITRE says
Oh that's great Bill! Yeah one of my 6quarts has been set aside as well. It may find a new home soon, I suspect. One of my readers said she donated hers to a firehouse. I was thinking about that.
Laurie says
Hi Urvashi, thank you so much for taking the time to do this review. I purchased 3 Mini duo's on the 11 of August. One for myself because I don't have any Instant Pot and wanted to try one out. The other two are for Christmas gifts for my son and grandson both single guys. I made Lasagna but not PIP method. While it didn't come to pressure probably because I filled it too full or there was not enough liquid in the pot, it did cook and tasted great. I didn't use PIP on purpose because I wanted more servings than PIP would give me. The next morning I made an egg ham and cheese quiche type meal using PIP. I took a IP60 recipe and basically halved it but had to cook it in two batches and it turned out great. Perhaps you could mention the best ways to adjust recipes for the IP Mini Duo? Fed my son some lasagna and he wanted his IP to make his own right away. So now I'm working on adjusting recipes for the mini. He works late hours and is happy to have a cooker with both delay and keep warm.
URVASHI PITRE says
Hey Laurie, I think the easiest way is to look at the total amount of meat, beans, vegetables etc.and decide what will fit. So no more than 2 lbs of meat, but if you add vegetables too, then probably closer to 1 lb of meat. So I'd look at the total cups of ingredients in aw ay, and cut it down until I think it's about 3-4 cups at most of uncooked food. Does that make sense?
Laurie and Terry says
Urvashi, thanks for the prompt reply. I do have to apologize as I had not reviewed your entire website (I'm bad) which I usually do. It is awesome that your recipes are all adjustable for serving size. I too have lost a lot of weight and try to stick to Keto- fat good sugar/carbs bad. Works for me, so I am so glad to see your website and also your YouTube channel. We love Asian food as well as anything spicy or flavorful. I'm going to work at recipes for the mini for now so I can pass them on to my son - so he can get eating healthy however I do plan on buying an IP 60 in the near future. Another quick question- do you think the lasagna would have come to pressure at a lower temp using the stew button? I did a manual 7 minutes on high and although cooked was a little scorched on the bottom. (Which says to me right off - not enough liquid for the higher heat.)
URVASHI PITRE says
The fact that it didn't come to pressure sounds like a sealing or lack of water issue, not a mini issue to me.
Sherry says
I had a *terrible* time understanding this. You were talking *way* too fast and kept fading in and out. Sorry - I really wanted to hear the review as I'm trying to decide between the 6 and 3 qts.
marlys says
Urvashi, you did a marvelous and comprehensive review. I like your "thinking woman's" take on cooking with the Instant Pot. It left me with no questions. Well done!
URVASHI PITRE says
Thank you! Glad that worked out
coopy says
Does the mini have manual option as in DUO 6 qt?
URVASHI PITRE says
Yes it does. I use that more than any other button really
Alberto Guerrero says
I just saw the video and I subscribed to the website twsleevers.com and pre ordered your book. I can't wait to try the recipes. I love Indian food. Thanks for making the video review.
URVASHI PITRE says
Oh my! Thank you! Welcome to the twosleevers team 🙂 there's a Facebook group for twosleevers where we discuss international recipes too if you're interested. Glad to have you and thanks for buying the cookbook! I'm excited about it

You're presentations are first rate! I wish I'd had you as a college professor. You don't waste time, always on point and your PowerPoint use is exceptional.
I currently have the 6 & 8 qt pots but don't think I'll get the mini...yet! Mother always used to say "what holds a lot, holds a little." We shall see!
URVASHI PITRE says
I used to teach college classes when I was in grad school 🙂 Hopefully I've gotten better over the years. I've been doing powerpoint for years now and am very comfortable with it. Glad you liked it. I love the mini because it's small enough for the 2-4 of us but you're right--or rather, your Mama was right. As all Mothers are 🙂

Thank you! Your video was so nicely done and very informative! Answered all my questions.
URVASHI PITRE says
excellent! So glad to hear that.

Finally got a chance to watch the video! My mini is still in the box, for all my excitement about it! Oh well. I'm sure I'll get there eventually! Great video, and damn girl, you're a great presenter - it's almost like it's your daytime job or something! 😉
URVASHI PITRE says
Lol! Why yes it is. 🙂 take that mini out! It's probably dying to come out and play.
Coreen Ho says
Good video, full of information and no filler. Yes you do speak fast, but you are totally understandable. Length of video is perfect, kept my attention throughout. Good use of PowerPoint slides.
URVASHI PITRE says
Nice! Thank you for the feedback
Lonormi Manuel says
Your review answered ALL my questions about the Mini. But I did have to watch it twice, because I didn't catch a few things the first time around. You speak REALLY quickly! 😀
URVASHI PITRE says
I know! Always been that way. But it was still 7 minutes so I wonder Jd people will watch
Lorraine says
Thanks for that review! I didn't really need the review to convince me because I've already decided that I love my cute Mini, but I wanted to hear your voice. 🙂
Today my Mini, on his first day here, has already made steel cut oats, soft boiled eggs, fruit compote, and yogurt is in there right now. After that I think I'll let him rest a bit. :p
I was interested to see how much rice can go in there. I usually make 3 cups (dry) so it will work perfectly for us. Although I'm quite sure I can't cook your butter chicken in there because I've resorted to quadrupling the recipe just so I can have some left to freeze! :p
Thanks for the review. And I did order the cookbook. 🙂

Another great Video! It leaves me with two simple questions.
Kindly explain what you meant about the "small cup" as provided in the IP. Is it really only 2/3rd cup?
Also, kindly explain what you were saying about how it doesn't "self seal."
Oh, and one other thing. Was that a 6qt Duo that you were showing it with? I suspect so but I didn't hear it specifically mentioned.
Again, many thanks!

Their cup is 3/4 of a regular 8 oz cup. On the self sealing, the Ultra when you close the lid, it seals the vent on its own which is so cool. The duo and the mini don't do that. And yes that was the 6qt. I should have mentioned it! Oops.
