Why You Should Trust My Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer Review
- Air Fryer Cookbooks: I have two best-selling air fryer cookbooks, Every Day Easy Air Fryer and Air Fryer Revolution, so you can feel confident in knowing that I use air fryers on a regular basis, I'm quite familiar with how they work and I know what makes a good air fryer.
- Experienced Reviewer: I've done various air fryer reviews in the past, so I have a wealth of knowledge about air fryers and what makes one better than another.
- Gadget geek!: I'm a self-proclaimed food tech enthusiast and have been known to purchase (and review) just about any kitchen appliance I can get my hands on.
Here are a few factors I'm using to review the Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer:
- Footprint
- Capacity

- Ease Of Use
- Ease Of Cleaning
- Price

Philips Starfish Technology Air Fryer
1. Footprint
In the case of footprint for this Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer, it isn't actually just the amount of space the air fryer takes up on your kitchen counter. I'm also taking into consideration how tall it is and if it will fit under your kitchen counters.
The Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer has a large footprint, but does fit nicely under your counter tops so you can easily tuck it away when it's not in use.
If you're wondering the exact dimensions of the Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer, they are:
16.6 X 12.36 X 11.88 inches
2. Capacity
Phillips was one of the first companies to offer a square air fryer basket. As with any other air fryer I've reviewed, you will find that capacity is deceiving. Depending on the shape of your air fryer, capacity might not be relevant to how much food you can cook at a high quality at one time.
While it says it can hold up to 3.25 quarts of food inside of the basket, this is deceiving. You will never want to stack food on top of each other to fill the basket completely. Here's why:
- Food will not crisp.
- Food will not cook evenly.
- It will take a tremendous amount of time for the food to cook.
Since you will ideally only place a single layer of food in the Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer, the square shape of the basket allows you to cook a large quantity of food at once without overlapping.
3. Features
There are several things I love about about this Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer. Here are some of the most noteworthy:
- Air fryer basket grate size. The basket on this air fryer has the perfect sized grate. It allows you to cook small food while still having holes large enough to allow significant air flow. This nearly eliminates the need to flip food half way through the cooking time.
- Rack Slider. This pulls out with your air fryer basket to prevent your basket from tipping over or hitting your countertops as soon as you pull it out to retrieve your food.
- Pausing Timer. The cook time stops when the basket is removed from the air fryer to continue with the appropriate time the recipe you're using asks for.
Do I Need Air Fryer Accessories?
Do you NEED air fryer accessories? No. Will you WANT air fryer accessories? Absolutely. Here are a list of my favorite air fryer accessories.
If you want to grab the bare minimum for air fryer cooking, you should grab a pair of these silicone tip tongs. They're an absolute life (and finger) saver when you're cooking in any air fryer.
4. Ease Of Use
I've reviewed dozens of different air fryers and have love several of them. Here are a few others that I thought were fantastic air fryers:
As much as I loved those when I reviewed them, I keep going back to this one. The best advice I can give you for choosing the right air fryer is to find one that fits in the space you have and has all of the functions and space you need for cooking your favorite foods.
If you can find an air fryer that does all of these things, you'll use it every day and fall in love with it as much as I did this air fryer. The Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer fits perfectly under my kitchen cabinets, doesn't take up too much footprint, has the perfect amount of presets, and is light enough that I can lift it to put it away after each use if I chose to do so.
What Can I Cook In The Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer
This air fryer comes with a small recipe insert. It also comes with several presets with touch buttons on the digital screen of the air fryer.
The programmable settings on this air fryer wear off over time. For that reason, I would suggest you use recipes that have specific cooking time and temperature options. If you need some suggestions for recipes like this, check out one of my air fryer cookbooks:
Every day easy air fryer and Air Fryer Revolution.
5. Ease Of Cleaning
If I cook something especially greasy like bacon or chicken wings, I start by taking a papertowel and wiping out the excess grease from the bottom. After that, here are the steps I take to deep clean my Phillips Air Fryer.
DON'T SCRUB. Seriously. Don't scrub the basket or the inside of your Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer basket. This will remove the nonstick coating and make your food stick even worse in the future.
- Fill the basket and inner basket with warm water and dish soap.
- Let sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Take a soft rag and wipe out any residue.
- Wipe down the outside of the air fryer.
If you're feeling lazy or simply just like to make life easier, this air fryer has a dishwasher safe basket. Just wipe out any crumbs or drippings and toss the basket in your dishwasher along with the rest of your dishes.
6. Price
One of the most notable things about this Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer is the price. It is significantly more expensive than other air fryers I have previously reviewed. However, the price comparison for me is cost vs value. Here are a few things that I think make this air fryer worth the investment over other less expensive air fryers:
- You like to have hands-off cooking and not worry about flipping food during cook time.
- Have a smaller cooking space and need the extra room to rest the air fryer basket on when removing food.
7. How Durable Is It?
I'm going to be honest. I had a different Phillips air fryer I LOVE that is absolutely identical to this model, but it has been discontinued. It was the Phillips Air Fryer Avance. I did my research and realized that this Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer is the exact same air fryer, but in black instead of white like I previously owned.
So, I ordered this new air fryer to compare and make sure they were indeed the same. They absolutely are. The functions, capacity, footprint...everything are the same. The only difference I noticed was the color.
So I would be confident in saying this air fryer will last you YEARS. My previous air fryer that is identical to this one has lasted 3 years and still works like it is brand new.
The only thing I would mention is that the preset button images eventually start to wear off over time. So you will either need to memorize the preset functions or find a great cookbook or two (like mine) and adapt to cook that way.
Would I Buy This?
What is the perfect air fryer for one person may not be the perfect air fryer for another person. Here are a few helpful hints to help you decide if this air fryer is the right one for you.
Buy A Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer If:
- Want a quiet air fryer. Quiet enough not to hear it in the next room.
- Want something durable that will last years without worrying about it wearing down or breaking.
- Don't like babysitting your food. Most food will not need to be flipped halfway through due to the size of the holes in the air fryer basket.
Pass On A Philips Starfish Technology XL Air Fryer If:
- You like to try new gadgets often and preplace appliances as soon as something new comes out.
- You want exact time and temperature options (it only goes by increments of 30F and only goes up to 390F max)
- Want a quiet air fryer. Quiet enough not to hear it in the next room.
