What Is A Kitchen Mandoline?
A kitchen mandoline is a slicer with a very sharp blade. They are generally known for their ability to quickly and uniformly cut food. They have one flat surface with an incredibly sharp blade.
To use a kitchen mandoline slicer, you run the item you're wanting to slice along the blade surface while pressing firmly.
Is A Mandoline Slicer Worth It?
What is the right kitchen gadget for one person may not be the right kitchen gadget for another person. In order to determine if a mandoline slicer is worth it, you should consider how frequently you see yourself using one.
If you're only using it once every couple of weeks, it may not be worth the investment. However, if you find yourself spending hours a week slicing cheese and vegetables, I would strongly consider picking up a mandoline slicer.
What Can I Use Instead Of A Mandoline?
There are ways to get similar results slicing food without a mandoline slicer. However, none of those methods are as efficient as a mandoline slicer. If you're in a pinch, here are a few other things you could use:
- Food processor
- Knife
- Cheese planer
- Vegetable peeler
- Kitchenaid mixer attachment
Why Are Mandolines So Dangerous?
In short, they're so dangerous because of how sharp the blade is. The blade is so sharp that just grazing your hand over it will slice it wide open. For this reason, always use extra caution when using and cleaning a mandoline slicer.
Things To Consider When Choosing Mandoline Slicers
For such a simple kitchen gadget, you would assume that there wouldn't be many differences between one mandoline slicer and the next. However, there are several different things that can make a mandoline slicer more user friendly than another.
- What type of blade does it have?
- How safe is it?
- How easy is it to clean?
- What does it come with?
- Does it have a storage container?
1. What Type Of Blade Does It Have?
Depending on the quality of your mandoline slicer, it can have either one blade or a variety of attachments. Less expensive models do not give the option to adjust the width of the slice.
Higher end mandoline slicers will have interchangable blades that give you variety in slice width. They can also have attachments for grating as well.
Along with variety, you should also consider the durability of the blade. The stronger the material the blade is made out of, the longer it will last, and the sharper it will stay over time.
2. How Safe Is It?
Over the past decade, the safety of mandoline slicers has improved by leaps and bounds. If you're over 30, you probably have your own horror story with a mandoline slicer or know someone close to you that does.
Luckily, most of the newer models of slicers come with at least a handguard that holds the food you're slicing so your skin doesnt come in too close of contact with the slicer. Some models even come with a glove for an extra safety measure.
3. How Easy Is It To Clean?
It can be intimidating to clean something with such a sharp blade. When considering which mandoline slicer is right for you, always observe how difficult it will be to clean. Part of the intrigue with a mandoline slicer is how quickly it can make meal prep.
For it to actually save you time, it shouldn't take forever to clean. For this reason, I reccommend a mandoline slicer that is dishwasher safe. Not only does it make the process fast and easy, but it also keeps your fingers away from the super sharp blade.
4. What Does It Come With?
Mandoline slicers can come with a wide variety of accessories and blades depending on the brand and model you choose. Here are a few things that you may expect to to come with the mandoline slicer you purchase:
- Hand or finger guard
- Safety glove
- Slicing handle
- Catch tray
- Replacment/ interchangable blades
5. Does It Have A Storage Container?
Some people prefer their mandoline slicer to come with a storage container, while other people have no preference at all. You may wonder what the advantage is to having a storage container with your mandoline slicer.
The bonus to having a storage container or catch tray with your mandoline slicer is that it keeps your food in an organized setting as you're slicing so it's easy to transport into a pan for cooking, or in to a bowl for salads. It's also a great way to keep your cooking space and food clean while you're meal prepping.

Instead of the Dash Safe Slice Mandoline mentioned here, buy the Geoffrey Zakarian Safe Slice Upright Mandoline, item #K50008 from QVC. They are identical products and at QVC the current price is $34.98. I own the Zakarian-labeled mandoline and it's fabulous. The box it came in indicates it's from Dash. I hope Urvashi won't remove my note as she won't receive any money if people purchase the mandoline from QVC as she does if people purchase from Amazon. I've always avoided traditional mandolines because they can be dangerous if not handled very carefully. The Dash/Zakarian models are EXTREMELY safe. I love mine.

I have had the Swissmar Borner for a few years now. It takes up a minimum amount of space, is easy to clean, is extremely sharp and I have yet to add any human ingredients to my recipes. I usually lay it flat over a bowl to catch the ingredients, making sure that the bowl is very stable. Other units that Urvashi reviewed that have built in "catchers" are certainly worth a good hard look, if you are looking.
